… On a nice sunny day, a long time ago - somewhere, for example in a cave or some similar place where the first people lived. A man came and brought something, maybe strawberries or a little dead animal, that he found and sat down to eat.
But then he saw that there was another man in the cave. The two looked at each other long and hard to find out who was bigger and stronger: I mean, who would take the food from the other.
But then something strange happens in the mind of the first one, he took the strawberries or whatever was there and passed some or even all of them to the other person - without a fight - just because he saw how hungry the other one was.
And then, maybe the next day, the first person went out looking for food again and something special happened, you know, he found out that that today the food seemed a lot easier to find. Then an inexpressibly sacred, magnificent sequence of thoughts ran through his head, and he said to himself, "Maybe food is easier to find today because I shared it yesterday."
… You see, he had no idea of seeds, or pens, or mental images that were formed because of the goodness he had done before. He simply has a glimmer of insight - at this point he invented the greatest invention created by mankind - goodness.
… And you see, it's not just instinct with him anymore. I mean, he's not like an animal feeding its young or anything. His mind rises to a whole new level of humanity: a whole new development of the human spirit. Because he begins to accept goodness as a principle: as part of the way he sees the mechanism of the world. He shows kindness to another human being because his view of the world has changed: he develops his new worldview, in which he has already realized that the very things and events around him can be created by the kindness he shows to others.
